Do not confuse them with Federal Reserve Bank Notes. In most cases these national bank notes will be worth more. They will have the word “national” in the bank’s name. The note will also feature a charter number and a six digit serial number.
The official enactment by Congress read, "That every national banking association, state bank, or state banking association shall pay a tax of ten percent on the amount of notes of any person, state bank, or state banking association used for circulation and paid out by them after the 1st day of August, Bonds eligible as collateral for posting to the Treasury were said to have the "circulation privilege" and the interest they bore provided seigniorage to the National Banks.
